nottingham residence

La Jolla, CA

This was an opportunity to expand the footprint of a small existing house and create a long-term home for a growing family.  We developed a vernacular that elevated the character of the traditional beach house and worked with sustainable design features to make the most of the ocean view at the third floor.  We used zinc standing seam metal “cool” roofs and cladding, exposed wood beams, white stucco, fiberglass clad wood windows, rustic wood and tile flooring, and a copper stair tower that brings people to the view deck with a view over La Jolla and the Pacific Ocean.

design process

The main views of Mission Valley from the house inspired the geometry.  We separated the main living spaces into public and private wings that are connected with a full glass corridor and entry.
